Skills Don’t Come with the Title: Cultivating Leadership at Every Level

Wonder how we came up with a different answer to the question of leadership? It’s simple; we asked a different question. Instead of pondering "Who are the leaders?" we delved into "What do leaders do?" When framed like this, it's evident that a mere title doesn’t make a leader—it's all about the action.

In my sessions, team members reflect on the traits they admired most in their best leaders. These characteristics typically cluster into three groups: Vision, Empathy, and Influence. These are not standalone traits but interconnected powers. Vision involves painting a compelling picture of what could be, seeing potential in people and projects. Empathy gives us the ability to recognize a universal longing to connect to something greater than ourselves. Influence is about rallying people towards common goals and unrealized potential.

Don’t get me wrong – titles have their place. But here's the kicker: they often confine our view, limiting the team's potential by focusing solely on those at the top. To cultivate a truly cohesive and dynamic team environment, vision, empathy, and influence need to be demonstrated at every level. That’s why we encourage every team member to lead from exactly where they are.
